Hightower Trail Roundtable welcomed Scouters via Facebook Livestream and in person to Oak Grove UMC. We heard and discussed best practices for onboarding both Pack and Troop families. Clear and repeated communication is critical to conveying the copious information concerning Scouting. See the Resources list below for great examples and links.

A simple STEM activity – Candy Cane Coding – was the Icebreaker, and would be perfect for Cubs at a Blue and Gold.

The Venturing Crew from Oak Grove UMC has fun events upcoming this winter. Being with your age group in a co-ed environment can be an appealing addition to Scouting for older youth.

The units at OGUMC were Featured by Hightower Trail in November – Sign Up to claim a spot for your unit on the District social media and in person!

ScoutBook, ScoutBook Plus, & Internet Advancement, Oh My!

Hightower Trail Roundtable was stocked with experts this month. Attendees are encouraged to participate rather than just listen, so discussion was lively and informative throughout the program… and after the program, too. After we turn off the lights, everyone knows you can just move to the parking lot! We love to see new units represented and our numbers increase every month. Three Scouters won door prizes! Next Roundtable there will also be a gift card PRIZE to the unit who brings the most representatives!

Erika Fields presented a Safety Moment on Anxiety, pointing out that situations like going to Scout camp can be a challenge for many. Some helpful information mentioned is linked below under “Resources”. Scouters also heard from the Council High Adventure Committee Chair, Daniel Yee, about opportunities to help get youth access to high adventure.

The main topic of the day was ScoutBook and how it is changing, what ScoutBook Plus (aka ScoutBook 2.0 ) is bringing, and where Internet Advancement fits in. Maurice Landrum, program specialist from Council, walked us through it. His wide range of experience using and teaching these tools was valuable. Scouters then split into breakout groups. The Troop reps stayed with Mr. Landrum, while Kelly Livingston (Pack 21 Den Leader and past committee chair, and T15 New Member Chair) did an excellent job leading the Pack unit reps.

Alternative Scout Advancement Plan: This is for Scouts who need accommodations for rank due to medical needs. (File is attached) Once completed by parents/Scoutmaster, they can submit it to chris.derose@scouting.org. Once submitted, it goes through an internal review process, there are discussions with the parents, etc. so please plan accordingly. (don’t wait till a week before your Court of Honor or summer camp!)

Membership Kickoff

Hightower Trail’s Membership Kickoff included demonstrations and tips for recruitment events. We discussed tactics for welcoming visitors, choosing games and activities, and creating an elevator speech about your unit. Andy Strain, Charter Organization Representative and past Cubmaster 007, drew from his lifetime of experience with EHUMC to present a fantastic Membership Moment on the relationships among the units and the charter org.

Scouters also experienced first-hand that our Roundtable takes its hashtags seriously! #SnacksSupportSupplies Pizza was accompanied by a presentation and membership materials from Toni Carter, District Executive. Scouters discussed and shared ideas for recruiting middle schoolers, acknowledged by many as a special group. Lalith Silva, whom that day was recognized as the District’s recipient of the Whitney M. Young, Jr Service Award, delighted the attendees by contributing his incredible homemade zucchini bread. Paul Knighten was the lucky winner of one of our coolest door prizes to date – a travel grill with a cooler bag!

District Updates noted the Cub Scout STEM event is earmarked for around Sept. 19th. Barry Deutsch requested insights from HT Scouters. There will be a Council Jamboree in March 2025, so District planners would like to hear your thoughts of whether and how a District event of some kind would be utilized by units. Communication Quandaries: Tools & Tactics

Scouters were rewarded for braving the May-hem to attend Roundtable. Door prizes and cookies were accompanied by focused and insightful discussion. After the opening of the meeting by Melanie Darby (T103 Committee Chair), Scouters played a communication focused game of “Mad Gab”. Our District Comiissioner, Olas Scott was the last to play, figuring out that he was saying “A Screwdriver” when the card he was reading aloud was printed with “Ask Rude Arrive Her”! Joe Earnest, ASM and Camp Card Mayhem Manager (T2115), presented a relevant Safety Moment concerning YPT and Communicating with Youth.

Communication Quandaries, Tools & Tactics was a Scouter-requested topic for Roundtable. Heather Reimer facilitated, and the discussion was engaging and helpful. Scouting units use a wide variety of tactics to communicate with different groups of people. Whether the message is urgent or critical affects the chosen method, and Scouters shared pros and cons of different tools. A wish list of features was developed. There was considerable interest in Troop Web Host and the use of a good, old-fashioned bulletin board! We had an exceptional example of the latter, thanks to our host for this meeting, Chamblee First United Methodist Church’s Scout Hut. The group discussed ways to encourage people to access and use the chosen communication tool, which included fresh topics, consistency, not duplicating the message elsewhere, and natural repercussions.
