The national Whitney M. Young, Jr. Service Award is designed to recognize those individuals and corporations who have been instrumental in the development of Scouting for rural, urban, and suburban youth who often face challenging barriers. This award recognizes “unsung heroes,” those who do exceptional service for disadvantaged youth.

Hightower Trail District is very proud to announce Lalith Silva as our district’s Whitney M. Young, Jr. Service Award Honoree. Lalith will be awarded during the Atlanta Area Council’s Whitney M. Young Reception on September 12th, 2024, along with other honorees from districts in the Atlanta Area Council.

Thankyou Lalith for all that you have done to support the Scouting Program for at-risk youth. Helping to provide experiences that develop self-esteem, character values and overall enhancing the lives of young people in disadvantaged areas of our community.

Aquatics Merit Badge Days will be held on Saturdays from 8am – 5pm. All participants, Scouts and Adults, who will be in the water or near the water and in boats will be required to take and pass the BSA Swimmer Classification test for each Merit Badge they take each week.

TAKE A WALK THROUGH THE CRADLE OF THE U.S. CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT

As a Scout in Troop 151 in the late 1930s, the young Martin Luther King, Jr.’s troop met at Ebenezer Baptist Church. “Sweet Auburn” Avenue, one of the most vibrant and successful African American corridors of the nation in that era, and was his neighborhood. On March 16, 2024, from 8 AM to 12 PM, you are invited to join Scouts to explore this historic neighborhood, hiking past some of the significant places of African American life and the civil rights movement.

When new Cub Scouts sign up during recruiting season, 8/1 through 10/31, it may be a few weeks before their pack and den meetings begin.  The Atlanta Area Council through a partnership with local organizations provides a Launch Kit full of scouting goodies to keep our new scouting families excited about their new adventure.  This year’s Launch Kit will be full of scouting essentials delivered to the new scout’s home in the new scout’s name to help prepare them for life as a scout and build anticipation for their pack and den meetings.  The elements of these kits are delivered to the council through various channels and must be assembled for shipping.  This is where YOU come in!

The Atlanta Area Council is gearing up to produce 8,000 launch kits and needs volunteers to help build those kits.  This is a great opportunity to incorporate service hours into a larger outing for Troops and Crews.  The AAC plans to begin building these launch kits in July at the Volunteer Service Center located across the street from Truist Park.  Once we are set up, there will be times over the coming weekends and some evenings when units can come out and build kits for 2 hours as part of an outing in the area.  Some attractions within 10 miles of the VSC are:

3. Truist Park tour
4. Hiking and History at Kennesaw Mountain
5. The Aviation History and Technology Center
6. The Mizuno Experience Center
7. Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center

12. Main Event
13. Chattahoochee River National Recreation at Cochran Shoals

Downtown Atlanta is only 11-12 miles away with the Botanical Gardens, King Center, Atlanta Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola, Center for Puppetry Arts, Centennial Olympic Park, CNN World Headquarters, Georgia State Capitol, College Football Hall of Fame, the Fox Theater, and many more!
