Scott Madden, Scoutmaster Troop 266, was called upon from the crowd to provide verbal instructions for Julian Fitts, District Director Soapstone Ridge, on how to perform the Lightning Position. They did GREAT. 😀

Katherine Hunt, Day Camp Director, told us how awesome it will be and that we should all go and bring lots of kids. And now I think I am helping with the conservation station. 🤷‍♀️ 👍

Cub Scout Spring Family Campout at Bert Adams will be SO COOL. ✈️ I remember parenting littles. I am volunteering for that one, too. It’s only fair. It’s not like my teenagers want to hang out with me all day, anyway. 🤪

DEMA

Dekalb Emergency Management Agency’s Adam Apodaca spoke to the Scouters about nasty weather, a little about what he does for preparedness efforts for the county, and gave some cool tips on how to get kids interested in thinking about weather preparedness. Teens can be trained and receive supplies as part of established community emergency response teams! There will be swag for all Hightower Trail units (weather radios and go-kits, I believe – specifics TBD) – thank you DEMA & Adam!

The Training Games: Unlock your Potential!

Yep. We played games. Bomb knots are good for bear bags and rope swings. 🐻 And when I mentioned I learned it at Leave No Trace L1 Instructor training from Garrett Bailey, then Travis Allen (Northern Ridge’s Roundtable Commissioner) showed me a picture of Mr. Bailey from high school. 🕺

The “Meat” of the Meeting

Annual Planning Inspiration from Mark Ethun (Committee Chair Pack 4475) – a vision and
mission for your unit will help annual planning stay focused and exciting. (If you would like
copies of Mark’s presentation materials, please reach out to us.)

Troop Breakout:
Discussed trip ideas – mostly Skiing 🙂 – and PLC planning – how often, when, and how the PLC
the year. T77’s PLC holds a yearly campout planning meeting and a yearly program planning
meeting. T15’s PLC holds a yearly campout planning meeting and then meets monthly to plan
troop meetings.

Pack Breakout:
Practiced Start/Stop/Continue in unit planning, and discussion.

Troop Ski trip to Maggie Valley Info – from Troop 477’s Barry Deutsch and Jeremy Webber.

Hotel Stays and Supervising Scouts (painter’s tape on the door jam) – from Erika Fields (Troop

Heart Health and Marfan’s Awareness Month – Be Informed, Be Prepared, and practice
appropriate communication with other adult leaders. (Most people don’t get diagnosed with
Marfan’s until AFTER they have an aortic dissection.)

We opened our meeting, talked about Atlanta Area snow days, and heard from our Featured Unit(s), Troops 129B and 129G from the Tucker pocket of Hightower Trail. Patrice Keeter and Katherine Hunt spoke about the awesome activities and service the units are doing, and also contributed a great deal of helpful information to our discussion focus for January Roundtable.

Recharter – Required Form

The BSA Annual Charter Agreement must be filled out by every unit and can be sent to Donna Carr (Council Registrar) or Antonia Carter (HT District Executive).

NON-TRADITIONAL FUNDRAISING

***Units must apply with Council’s Unit Money Earning Application (send to Mary Chesser).

Christmas Trees – Troop 129B, Patrice Keeter
- Unit’s only fundraiser. Open for three weeks Nov/Dec. Pays for most of everything for everyone.
- Significant amount of work for a relatively small group of adults for planning and preparation. Everyone required to participate (unless not appropriate, ie., religion)
- Considerations:
  - Up front costs
  - Power permits
  - Storage required for stuff
  - Dependent on nature for the trees
  - Appropriate space and visible location for the sale
- Similarities to pumpkin sale, i.e., Troop 534 at Shallowford Presbyterian Church
Roasted Corn Booth, Georgia State Fair – Troop 757, Zach Hulet
- Large scale effort is similar in ways to the trees for planning, preparation, storage needs, and it pays for all the things for everybody.
- Open for one week, Scouts are not in school. Every family is required to participate 40 hours.
- Considerations:
  - Up front costs for equipment and corn
  - Health Inspector
  - Hand washing stations and hot water.
Pancake Breakfast with Santa – Troop 129G, Katherine Hunt
- Smaller scale with much less up front cost, planning and prep. Took 1/2 day.
- Scouts handled many aspects independently, and are taking ownership of the event, planning improvements for next year.
BBQ dinner takeout, Dunwoody’s July 4th Parade – Troop 266, Scott Madden
- Catered bbq sandwiches and drinks, troop does watermelon, brownies, etc.
- One day. Participation not required, but each Scout is asked to sell 10 presale tickets. Presales outnumber day-of sales. Presales help protect against fluctuations on parade attendance.
School Dinner Bake Sale – Pack 551, Erika Fields
- Taking advantage of a school dinner event, the Cubs hold a bake sale and walk around selling camp cards. They are encouraged to bake something to represent their culture.
- Low planning and prep. Approachable participation for younger Scouts.
Other $$$ Ideas
- Hot chocolate or apple cider
- Wreaths (make from tree trimmings)
- Yard sale (pure profit)
- Tree ornaments
- Rent out your specialized equipment to other units
- Spaghetti Dinner
- Gift wrapping (I know there is a unit in Atlanta Area somewhere that does this)
- Car wash
- Krispy Creme Donuts (James Bratton led this for 2115 a while back.)

Hightower Trail Roundtable welcomed Scouters via Facebook Livestream and in person to Oak Grove UMC. We heard and discussed best practices for onboarding both Pack and Troop families. Clear and repeated communication is critical to conveying the copious information concerning Scouting. See the Resources list below for great examples and links.

A simple STEM activity – Candy Cane Coding – was the Icebreaker, and would be perfect for Cubs at a Blue and Gold.

The Venturing Crew from Oak Grove UMC has fun events upcoming this winter. Being with your age group in a co-ed environment can be an appealing addition to Scouting for older youth.

The units at OGUMC were Featured by Hightower Trail in November – Sign Up to claim a spot for your unit on the District social media and in person!

Finances, Funds and Fees… oh my!

Hightower Trail Roundtable kicked off with laughs and memories. Prior to getting into the nitty gritty of unit finance, Erika Fields prompted the Scouters to share some childhood memories. In the crisp air and clear skies of the late October evening in Atlanta, we shared favorite childhood costumes and funny stories. Check the list below for Erika’s top resources for Unit Finances. Attendees also met our new district executive, Nathan Ray – he grew up in our District, and was a member of Troop 6.

ScoutBook, ScoutBook Plus, & Internet Advancement, Oh My!

Hightower Trail Roundtable was stocked with experts this month. Attendees are encouraged to participate rather than just listen, so discussion was lively and informative throughout the program… and after the program, too. After we turn off the lights, everyone knows you can just move to the parking lot! We love to see new units represented and our numbers increase every month. Three Scouters won door prizes! Next Roundtable there will also be a gift card PRIZE to the unit who brings the most representatives!

Erika Fields presented a Safety Moment on Anxiety, pointing out that situations like going to Scout camp can be a challenge for many. Some helpful information mentioned is linked below under “Resources”. Scouters also heard from the Council High Adventure Committee Chair, Daniel Yee, about opportunities to help get youth access to high adventure.

The main topic of the day was ScoutBook and how it is changing, what ScoutBook Plus (aka ScoutBook 2.0 ) is bringing, and where Internet Advancement fits in. Maurice Landrum, program specialist from Council, walked us through it. His wide range of experience using and teaching these tools was valuable. Scouters then split into breakout groups. The Troop reps stayed with Mr. Landrum, while Kelly Livingston (Pack 21 Den Leader and past committee chair, and T15 New Member Chair) did an excellent job leading the Pack unit reps.

Many opportunities are available in the Atlanta area over the next few months for training, advancement, and fun times. See the list below for links!

Membership Kickoff

Hightower Trail’s Membership Kickoff included demonstrations and tips for recruitment events. We discussed tactics for welcoming visitors, choosing games and activities, and creating an elevator speech about your unit. Andy Strain, Charter Organization Representative and past Cubmaster 007, drew from his lifetime of experience with EHUMC to present a fantastic Membership Moment on the relationships among the units and the charter org.

Scouters also experienced first-hand that our Roundtable takes its hashtags seriously! #SnacksSupportSupplies Pizza was accompanied by a presentation and membership materials from Toni Carter, District Executive. Scouters discussed and shared ideas for recruiting middle schoolers, acknowledged by many as a special group. Lalith Silva, whom that day was recognized as the District’s recipient of the Whitney M. Young, Jr Service Award, delighted the attendees by contributing his incredible homemade zucchini bread. Paul Knighten was the lucky winner of one of our coolest door prizes to date – a travel grill with a cooler bag!

District Updates noted the Cub Scout STEM event is earmarked for around Sept. 19th. Barry Deutsch requested insights from HT Scouters. There will be a Council Jamboree in March 2025, so District planners would like to hear your thoughts of whether and how a District event of some kind would be utilized by units. Communication Quandaries: Tools & Tactics

Scouters were rewarded for braving the May-hem to attend Roundtable. Door prizes and cookies were accompanied by focused and insightful discussion. After the opening of the meeting by Melanie Darby (T103 Committee Chair), Scouters played a communication focused game of “Mad Gab”. Our District Comiissioner, Olas Scott was the last to play, figuring out that he was saying “A Screwdriver” when the card he was reading aloud was printed with “Ask Rude Arrive Her”! Joe Earnest, ASM and Camp Card Mayhem Manager (T2115), presented a relevant Safety Moment concerning YPT and Communicating with Youth.

Communication Quandaries, Tools & Tactics was a Scouter-requested topic for Roundtable. Heather Reimer facilitated, and the discussion was engaging and helpful. Scouting units use a wide variety of tactics to communicate with different groups of people. Whether the message is urgent or critical affects the chosen method, and Scouters shared pros and cons of different tools. A wish list of features was developed. There was considerable interest in Troop Web Host and the use of a good, old-fashioned bulletin board! We had an exceptional example of the latter, thanks to our host for this meeting, Chamblee First United Methodist Church’s Scout Hut. The group discussed ways to encourage people to access and use the chosen communication tool, which included fresh topics, consistency, not duplicating the message elsewhere, and natural repercussions.

Cub Scout Program Updates

***IMPORTANT DATE CHANGE – Hightower Trail’s May Roundtable (Communication Tools and Common Issues) moves to 5/16 so we can meet prior to the end of the school year. See you then!

Scouters heard a fantastic presentation by Daniel Yee, Cubmaster P551 and then dove into more details with Pack reps about how the changes would affect their unit operations. Margaret Evans, AAC Camping and Outdoor Chair assisted Troop reps with their breakout session.

Oak Grove UMC hosted lively discussion, laughter, and an insightful Membership Moment given by Kassandra Maender (T2115 Committee Chair). A warm and enthusiatric cheer was given for attending Scouters who continue to give to BSA despite their own children long having aged out.

Five lucky Scouters won door prizes, including a AAC fleece blanket, a keychain light, and a snazzy set of BSA cufflinks and necktie! Our District Executives provided snacks to sustain us through a very enjoyable time of fellowship, networking and brainstorming.
